Kerry praises "Hariri’s efforts to end presidential vacuum"
US Secretary of State John Kerry has congratulated on Tuesday former Prime Minister Saad Hariri on “the role that he played to put an end to the presidential vacuum,” Hariri's office said.
“Former PM Hariri received a phone call from US Secretary of State John Kerry whereby he congratulated him on the election of General Michel Aoun as president and on the role that he played to put an end to the presidential vacuum,” the office said in a statement.
For his part, Hariri told Kerry that he is “optimistic” that the election will “allow the reactivation of state’s institutions” in order to “address the various challenges that Lebanon and the Lebanese people are facing.”
Yesterday, Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun was elected president on Monday after around two and a half years of presidential vacuum.
His presidential chances had been mainly increased by a key endorsement from Hariri in mid-October.
Aoun's nomination had also received support from Hezbollah and the Lebanese Forces.
