REPORT: Saudi artist turns discarded palms to art

An artist in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia has been putting his skills and creativity to work to turn discarded waste products into works of art.

In this part of the country palm trees are found in abundance, and palm branches and trunks are often discarded. This is where Abdul Rahman al-Ghalth comes in.

“The palm trunks are dumped by the millions. We take them and make them works of art and transform them from useless material into a useful material.

We benefit from them financially, turn it into artwork as you can see,”said al-Ghalth.

Tourists and handicraft collectors are his customers at his small workshop in a popular market in downtown Onaizah - known for its craftsmen and antiques.

But creating artworks and selling them isn't all al-Ghalth does - he's also passing down his skills to a new generation.

Last month he held a five day training course for 15 young boys, teaching them how to carve artworks on palm trees.
