Minister Machnouq: Committee to follow up on demands of prisoners to be formed

Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouq said on Thursday that a joint committee will be formed to follow up on the demands of the inmates who have been calling for a general amnesty.

Machnouq said that Prime Minister Saad Hariri and Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel-Latif Derian have tasked me with informing the families of the prisoners their pledge to reach a "general amnesty that accomplishes justice."

"The committee will be formed during the next few days to follow up on the righteous demands of the inmates," Machnouq said after meeting with Derian at Dar al-Fatwa.

The minister also said that "a general amnesty requires a certain political atmosphere that is not available at this period."

“The top priority until June 29 is for drafting a new vote law,” Machnouq concluded by saying.
