A young Afghan woman, working at a newly launched all-women television channel in Afghanistan, recently shared her dreams of living a different life unlike most traditional women in her society.
The 22-year-old Sadia works as an anchor for outdoor programs at the Women Television Channel or shortly called Zan TV, as Zan means Women in Dari. Prior to working with Zan TV, Sadia was a sprinter and led the Afghanistan's national track-and-field team to the 2016 Rio Olympics as its coach.
Though the Afghan team did not achieve great results, the trip to Rio de Janeiro has indeed broadened Sadia's horizon and firmed her faith to promote women's career development and improve their social status in her conservative country.
So when she heard about the launch of Zan TV several months ago, Sadia realized its potential in fulfilling her dream by doing what she is good at. It made more sense as she had majored in media studies in college.
"Most TV channels focus on male topics and our channel serves female. Each department work is handled by female employees. Events and achievements of Afghan women will be brought to public on TV screens, which is beneficial for women, and acts as a positive advancement for the career development of women in Afghanistan," she stressed.
Sadia is in charge of a program named "energy plus" at Zan TV, an outdoor program highlighting Afghan women's progress in sports, and aiming at encouraging more women in taking part in different activities.
Her family, nevertheless, was not so supportive to her choice.
