German president kicks off his official visit to Beirut

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived on Monday to Beirut on an official three-day visit to Lebanon at the invitation of President Michel Aoun.

The German president is accompanied by his wife, German First Lady Elke Budenbender, and several German officials.

Later in the day, President Steinmeier held talks with President Michel Aoun over the Lebanese-German bilateral relations and means to develop cooperation in various fields.

Talks reportedly featured high over the regional and International affairs.

President Aoun also said that the Syrian refugee crisis is a common International responsibility, stressing the need to guarantee the safe return of the refugees.

On another note, Aoun stressed the necessity of Germany standing beside Lebanon against the frequent Israeli aggression, stressing the need to implement resolution 1701.

For his part, the German president said that the coexistence in Lebanon is a model for the entire region, adding that the economic and social challenges are big as a result of the Syrian displacement.

He also pointed out that his country is interested in Lebanon’s stability, adding that it is in its interest for that stability to continue.

The German President will also meet with Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Saad Hariri, and will also visit the UNIFIL's German naval contingent.
