Lebanese expats vote in six Arab counties

The first phase of the Lebanese expatriates voting kicked off on Friday morning at 6:00 AM (Beirut time) in six Arab countries.

It is the first voting of its kind that allows Lebanese nationals and expatriates to vote abroad.

The ballot boxes opened in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait.

Until 6:00 PM, the voters’ turnout reached 6875 distributed as follows: 2049 in Dubai, 701 in Abu Dhabi, 207 in Oman, 1062 in Doha, 1071 in Kuwait, 105 in Egypt, 1034 in Riyadh, and 646 in Jeddah.

This as some voters in Dubai faced difficulties in voting as their names were not registered in the voters' lists.

For his part, Lebanese Consul in Dubai Assaf Doumit told LBCI that no technical problems were reported until present, adding that the turnover is "good."

Meanwhile, Lebanese ambassador to Qatar Hassan Najem said that 1800 voters are registered on the voters' lists knowing that Qatar hosts more than 23000 Lebanese expatriates.

Ongoing disagreements over the electoral law was the main reason elections were delayed three times since 2009.

Lebanon splits power among religious groups according to quotas adjusted at the end of the 1975-90 civil war. The president is always a Maronite Christian, the prime minister a Sunni Muslim and the parliament speaker a Shi'ite.

In parliament, the 128 seats are split evenly - 64 for Christians and 64 for Muslims including Druze, with the two halves further divided among 11 total sects. Each electoral district has seats apportioned according to its demographic makeup.
