Medical waste disposal between incinerating and landfilling

The residents of the capital Beirut have expressed displeasure over the smell of the black smoke arising from the incinerator of the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), and took to social media platforms to raise their voice.

The most dangerous fact about this situation is that the black smoke is the result of burning harmful medical waste related to chemotherapy treatments given to cancer patients.

The World Health Organization (WHO) allows the incineration of this type of waste, but based on specific criteria and with a temperature exceeding 100 degrees Celsius.
