President Aoun to Spanish FM: Lebanon looks forward to a change in EU’s position over refugees’ return

President Michel Aoun urged Friday the European Union to take an encouraging position regarding the return of the Syrian refugees, mainly after the restoration of security and stability is several Syrian areas and the declaration made by Syrian officials welcoming the refugees’ return.

 

During a meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell Fontelles, at Baabda presidential palace, President Aoun stated that Lebanon has helped 194 thousand refugees to return to their homeland, stressing that there were no reports of problems, according to reports provided by international organizations present in Syria.

 

“Lebanon looks forward to changing the European position to facilitate the return under the supervision of the international community in hopes of avoiding undesirable repercussions in case Lebanon is urged to take steps to organize the refugee return with the Syrian government,” the president explained.

 

For his part, the Spanish minister said his country sees in the decisions and recommendations of Cedre conference an opportunity for Lebanon which demonstrates the confidence of the international community in its potentials.
