Amnesty International said that the trial of eight Lebanese nationals detained in the United Arab Emirates is unfair and based on fabricated confessions obtained under torture.
A verdict is expected on May 15 in the trial of the eight men, who were arrested in the UAE between December 2017 and February 2018.
The organization said that “the charges of forming a terrorist network and planning attacks in the Emirates on orders of Hezbollah were fabricated charges.”
A researcher for the Britain-based rights group Sima Watling told AFP that “these men were tortured and they were forced into making confessions,” noting that “the defendants had lived in the United Arab Emirates for years but were denied regular access to their families or to a lawyer.”
