Environment Minister Fadi Jreissati declared that they have presented a proposal that includes 25 sanitary landfills, out of which 10 locations have been approved, stressing that after failure to reach agreement over one location, they proposed the decentralization of the waste issue.
In a press conference, Jreissati noted that they have no choice other than to turn 1000 dumpsite into 25 sanitary landfills.
He added that the local authorities (municipalities) have a one-month deadline to approve the locations proposed, stating that anyone who rejects a certain location has to present an alternative to be inspected and turned into a sanitary landfill.
“For the first time in Lebanon’s history, we have issued a decree on sorting waste from the source, which helps in returning the cost and requires us to change our routine by allocating 3 garbage bins to sort waste,” he said, reiterating that it will be forbidden to send more than 30% of the waste to the landfill.
