Pompeo: Iran is “common factor” behind protests in Middle East region
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday that Iran is “common factor” behind the protests taking place in the Middle East region, noting that protesters in Iraq, Lebanon and Iran itself are opposing the clerical regime.
Pompeo stressed that Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi resigned "because the people were demanding freedom and because the security forces killed dozens of people.”
“That's because largely due to the Iranian influence," Pompeo said.
“The same thing goes for Lebanon and the protests in Beirut,” he went on saying.
"They want Hezbollah and Iran out of their country and their system which represents a violent and a repressive force," he said.
He also noted that protests inside Iran -- which Amnesty International says killed more than 200 people -- revealed that Iranians were also "fed up."
"They see religious rulers who are stealing money, the ayatollahs stealing tens of millions of dollars," he said.
