Abou Faour: The option of Syrian refugee camps not far from reality

Minister of Social Affairs Wael Abou Faour and UN emergency relief coordinator Valerie Amos held a joint press conference on Wednesday noon whereby they both spoke on the issue of Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

Abou Faour stated that Lebanon lacks the financial means that would enable it to properly take care of the refugees, asking for monetary assistance in order to further relieve Syrian refugees. Abu Faour added that no official figure on the number of refugees was marked, however registration would begin as of ten days.

“The option of refugee camps is not on the table, however it is not far-fetched,” he added.

For her part, UN emergency relief coordinator Valerie Amos said she had spoken to several Syrian refugees and listened to their horrific accounts.

“I also spoke to the Lebanese government whereby means of how the International Community can support were discussed,” she added.

She expressed gratitude to the Lebanese government adding that the International Community is ready to assist in this regard.

“We are exerting high efforts in Syria, working with refugees both Syrian and Palestinian.

The plan outlined by the Lebanese government was also discussed in order to maintain a consistent line of help for the Syrian refugees and  those displaced,” she concluded.

Later on in the day, Prime Minister Najib Mikati reiterated the words and concerns voiced by Abou Faour via his twitter account saying: "We reiterate our commitment to the relief of Syrian refugees in Lebanon until they have returned back to their homes. Soon a meeting that will encompass all members of international aid organizations will be called upon in order to devise strategies aimed at assisting the humanitarian conditions of the refugees, and seek means of providing assistance."

During a meeting with United Nations emergency relief coordinator Valerie Amos, the Lebanese Premiere stressed that Lebanon is fully committed to the relief and protection of the Syrian refugees.

Mikati informed Amos of the cabinet’s plan in this regard and the requirements needed to fulfill shelter and relief works.
