REPORT: Council's elections widen the gap between Mufti Qabbani and Future movement

The elections of the Supreme Islamic Council widened the gap between the Mufti of the Republic Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani and the Future Movement, since Mufti Qabbani is insisting on holding these elections, while he preferred postponing it in the past, according to his opponents.               

The meeting held by the Supreme Islamic Council on Saturday may be his last, as a source from Dar al-Fatwa told LBCI that the meeting's agenda tackled the issue of the elections, noting that the atmosphere during the meeting was calm, contrary to expectations of a "loud session."            

It was surprising that none of the conferees read a statement following the session, as they normally do.             

A high discretion overshadowed the results of the discussions of the meeting, but it was revealed that the Prime Minister Najib Mikati and the former PM Fouad Siniora will conduct contacts in order to study all the available options and in an attempt to bridge the gap between both parties.               

While the Future Movement proposed to postpone the elections until the beginning of next summer, Mufti Qabbani reiterated his call on the electorate to elect the council's 24 members, setting up the date of the elections on the last Sunday of December at Dar al-Fatwa in Beirut and all the centers of the endowment districts in the region.
