Sub-parliamentary committee postpones its meetings until Monday

The parliamentary sub-committee tasked with discussing the electoral law resumed its meetings on Wednesday at the Hall of Administration and Justice Committee at Parliament under the chairmanship of MP Robert Ghanem.        

MPs Sami Gemayel, Georges Adwan, Ali Fayad, Ali Bazzi, Serge Torsakissian, Hagop Pakradonian, Ahmad Fatfat, Akram Chehayeb, and Alain Aoun were present during the meeting.                    

After the meeting, MP Robert Ghanem said that deputies discussed the possibility of mixing the majoritarian system and the law of proportionality and added that "a law agreed upon by all parties is better than a law rejected by one Lebanese political party."                     

Ghanem added that the sub-committee postponed its meetings until the 21st of January 2012.                     

For his part, Kataeb MP Sami Gemayel urged Speaker Nabih Berri to resume the work of the joint parliamentary committees in order to pave way for a vote on the electoral law.         

As for the LF MP Georges Adwan, he reiterated his party's stance and said that the elections will not be held on the basis of the 1960's electoral law.              

"We either want an electoral law agreed upon by the majority or we want the Orthodox gathering electoral law," Adwan added.                         

Meanwhile, the Future Bloc MP Ahmad Fatfat said that today's discussions were positive.                  

Among the stances was that of MP Serge Torsarkisian who said that they are seeking a clear law that serves all parties and added that the 1960's electoral law and the Orthodox Gathering electoral draft are both rejected.                    

For his part the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc MP Ali Fayyad said that the March8 forces have various remarks and reservations pertaining to the electoral draft presented by Former Minister Fouad Boutros.              

As for the representative of the FPM MP Alian Aoun, he said that they are open to discuss any electoral law that ensures adequate representation.
