Saudi Arabia threatens to ban WhatsApp, Skype and other applications

Saudi Arabian authorities threatened on Monday to ban the use of Smartphone messenger WhatsApp, Internet call service Skype and other instant messaging applications.

In this context, well-informed sources reported that the decision is similar to the one taken years ago related to the use of BlackBerry phones amid concerns related to encrypted communication.

However, the sources added that the Communications and Information Technology Commission urged the companies operating the applications to comply with the required regulations in order to avoid their suspension in the Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia banned the use of BlackBerry phones in sending and receiving messages in 2010, claiming that communications cannot be monitored, therefore hindering efforts deployed in fighting terrorism and crimes.
