REPORT: Christians mark Easter period with traditional religious celebrations across the world

The street lights were turned off in the Portuguese village of Sardoal on Thursday as hundreds of candle carrying worshippers illuminated the streets in the "Procession of Fogareus" (flame's procession) a traditional religious celebration to mark the Easter period.

The Catholic faithful carried candles and wore black clothes as they walked around the small village, which is home to around four thousand residents.

Easter Sunday marks what Christians believe is the resurrection of Jesus and caps holy week, which includes Palm Sunday, when Christians believe Jesus returned to Jerusalem, and Good Friday, which marks his crucifixion.

In Peru, at least thirty actors presented the scene of the Baptism of the Christ for the thirty-third year in a row, where the region’s residents celebrated the occasion.

Catholic penitents in the Philippines carried out their traditional re-enactment of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday - the day that he was crucified according to the Christian faith.

Dozens of men, faces shrouded by scarves and heads crowned with thorny vines, struggled around the streets of the village of San Pedro Cutud, in Pampanga province.
Some volunteers were then nailed to crosses in a re-enactment of Christ's crucifixion.

In Belgium, the preparations for the Easter Sunday and Monday filled the streets decorated with colorful eggs, rabbits and chicks.
