REPORT: Legendary caricaturist Pierre Sadek dies after long battle with illness

After a long struggle with illness, Lebanese caricaturist Pierre Sadek passed away as reported by the state run National News Agency on Wednesday.

Sadek, the political caricaturist, was born in Zahle, in 1938. His caricatures were widely known both on print and audiovisual media with daily publications both on An-Nahar newspaper and several other media outlets.

Sadek was honored several times during his lifetime, earning the National Cedar title of Knight during President Suleiman Franjieh's mandate in 1972 and the National Cedar title of Commander during President Michel Suleiman's term in office.

He was also decorated with the Said Akl award alongside other honorary accolades. Agence France Presse, UPI, Time Magazine, Le Matin, France Soir, The Washington Post, Atlas Magazine and Jeune Afrique are amongst the numerous international magazines, newspapers and news agencies that published Sadek's satirical cartoons.

An-Nahar, Al-Anwar, Al-Syassa, Al-Amal, Al-Joumhouria, Al-Diar and Al-Nahar Al-Arabi Wal Dowali delivered his daily dose of satire to newspaper readers on a local and regional front.

Sadek was not just any caricaturist; he was actually the very first caricaturist to have his drawings published daily on TV worldwide, on LBCI from 1986 to 2002 and on Future Television as of 2002.

"Atelier D'Art" is the advertisement company he founded.

In 1986, one of Sadek's infamous caricatures that surfaced in An-Nahar landed him in a military court trial as it mocked the authenticity of the elections that were being held during the mandate of President Charles Helou.

Sadek will be remembered for his swift brush and biting wit alongside the legacy he has left behind.
