Diabetes: the silent killer

While countries around the world are busy searching for means to control the disease, it was astonishing to notice that on the occasion of World Diabetes Day, there were no official Lebanese statistics available on the number of people diagnosed with diabetes in the country.

According to global estimates, 377 million people suffer from diabetes. In Lebanon, rough estimates show that 10-13% of Lebanese may suffer from diabetes.

In light of the absence of official statistics for the number of diabetics in Lebanon, Dr. Youssef Obeid said that 10% of the Lebanese may be affected by the disease each year.

More than 4,500,000 die annually from diabetes around the world. Sadly, this number is expected to increase substantially in the next few years. Is there a Diabetes prevention plan in Lebanon? Or at least awareness campaigns to recognize and discuss this disease? These are the burning questions on Diabetes in Lebanon.
