REPORT: Judge Saqr hands over authority of Bilal bin Rabah mosque to Dar al-Fatwa

Government Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr handed over on Sunday the authority of the Bilal bin Rabah Mosque to the Dar al-Fatwa, after the forensic evidence ended field investigations and lifting fingerprints.

As for the citizens who were residing in Sidon’s Abra region across the building complex of Sheikh Ahmad Assir, they were permitted to their homes and regained access to the four buildings located near the security complex.

Later in the day, Abra’s municipality held a press conference, where it called on the citizens to return to their homes, declaring that it will be receiving the applications of the citizens whose houses were damaged during the clashes which took place in the city last week.

Fighting in the city of Sidon began on Sunday the 23rd of June after Lebanese Armed Forces arrested an al-Assir follower.

The army says the cleric's supporters opened fire without provocation on an army checkpoint.

Official reports said at least 17 soldiers were killed and 50 were wounded in the fighting while more than 20 of al-Assir's supporters died in the battle, according to a security official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to talk to reporters.

Al-Assir is a virulent critic of the powerful Shiite group Hezbollah group, which along with its allies dominates Lebanon's government.

He supports rebels fighting to oust Syria's President Bashar Assad.

The fighting between troops and armed supporters of al-Assir have transformed the city, which had been largely spared the violence plaguing border areas near Syria, into a combat zone.
