Lebanon marks the 68th Anniversary of the Army Day

Lebanese political and military figures alongside representatives of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon celebrated the 68th Anniversary of the Army Day at the Shukri Ghanem barracks in Fayyadiyeh.

The celebration was held in the presence of President Michel Sleiman, Lebanese Armed Forces Commander Jean Kahwaji, Prime Minister-Designate Tammam Salam, caretaker Prime Minster Najib Mikati, Chief of Staff Major General Walid Salman, caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn along with Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc MP Mohamad Raad.

For his part, Change and Reform bloc MP Simon Abi Ramia told LBCI that August 1st marks a national holiday, noting that everyone should stand by the Lebanese Armed Forces which made significant sacrifices in order to maintain Lebanon's security.

In this context, Abi Ramia said "his bloc would have preferred that the cabinet had designated another Army Commander" in a bid to respect the Lebanese institutions, calling on the Lebanese parties to honor the constitution.

Caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn signed yesterday a decree stipulating the extension of the LAF Commander General Jean Kahwaji and the Chief of Staff Walid Salman's terms for a two year period.
