Mikati: Tripoli’s explosions are a humanitarian disaster

A meeting was held on Saturday at the residence of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati in Tripoli to discuss the repercussions of the twin explosions that rocked the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Friday.                            

In this context, caretaker PM Mikati said that Tripoli’s incident is a humanitarian disaster, noting that the explosions caused severe damages to the city and left several people dead. He also revealed that intensive security measures will be implemented, while the entrances of the city of Tripoli will be monitored in order to prevent similar incidents from taking place.                  

Following the meeting, Mikati pointed out that at least 110 injured remain in the hospital, some of them are in critical conditions, stressing that the Health Ministry exercised its duty by requesting the hospitals to receive all the wounded people at its expense.                

However, Mikati confirmed that a Sheikh was arrested following the explosions.                        

The meeting was attended by caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, caretaker Finance Minister Mohammad Safadi, caretaker State Minister Ahmad Karameh, caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Faysal Karameh, Deputies Samir Jesr and Mohammad Kabbara, Judge Saqr Saqr, Public Prosecutor Judge Samir Hamoud, and other security officials.                    

The caretaker PM then headed to the sites of the attacks to examine the situation.

On Friday the 23rd of August, two explosions rocked the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli near the al-Taqwa and al-Salam mosques, leaving 45 persons killed and almost 500 others injured.
