STL Trial Chamber Presiding Judge Resigns

Judge Robert Roth, Special Tribunal for Lebanon Presiding Judge of the Trial Chamber, has resigned.

Judge Roth joined the Tribunal in September 2011 following a career in the judiciary as well as academia.

The STL said that During Judge Roth's at the Tribunal, he performed his duties "true to his ideals and with energy".

The STL asserted that the resignation of Judge Roth does not hinder the ongoing preparations for a "fair and expeditious trial" set to start in January 2014.

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon concluded by saying that it has mechanisms in place to ensure that its mandate is met, including the possibility of assigning an Alternate Judge in the event of a resignation.
