Israel launches new threats against Lebanon and Hezbollah

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Northern Commander Yair Golan launched on Wednesday a new series of threats against Lebanon and Hezbollah, warning that “once Israel enters Lebanon, it will fight powerfully as it did during Operation Pillar of Cloud against the Gaza Strip.”

The Israeli commander added that Hezbollah and its leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah are well aware that they will be confronting a strong army determined to triumph, and to turn Lebanon into ruins.

Golan said that providing the Shiite party with advanced weapons is a continuous threat against Israel and must be ended. On the 14th of November 2012, Israel launched an eight-day operation, dubbed “Operation Pillar of Cloud” against the Hamas-governed Gaza Strip.

On 21 November a ceasefire was announced after days of negotiations between Hamas and Israel under Egypt’s mediation. Gaza officials said 133 Palestinians were killed in the conflict, including 79 militants, 53 civilians and 1 policeman, while around 840 others were wounded. However, Israeli officials said six Israelis were killed and 240 were injured.

Hezbollah had been fighting against Israel since 1982 until the year 2000 when the Israelis withdrew from South Lebanon. In July 2006, Israel engaged into a 34-day military conflict against Hezbollah, which ended with a United Nations-brokered ceasefire on August 14, 2006.
