Heavy gunfire erupts between Zeaiter and Hjoula families in Beirut’s Lailaki

The state-run National News Agency reported on Friday that clashes re-erupted between the Zeaiter and Hjoula families in Beirut’s Lailaki region on the backdrop of previous disputes, noting that machine gunfire shots were being sporadically heard.

This as the popular committee of the Lailaki residents had called for "checkpoints for peace" to be set up at 4 pm this afternoon in a bid to pacify the situation, only to later call them off.

On Sunday, a Lebanese citizen identified as Hasan Hjoula was critically injured in an armed ambush in the Beirut Southern Suburb region of al-Kafaat when fighting erupted between both families.

The Army Command said in a statement that gunmen in an SUV opened fire from light assault weapons on a citizen in the al-Kafaat area, wounding him critically.

In August, two men were also injured in renewed clashes between the Hjoula and Zeaiter families in the region of al-Lailaki.
