MP Kanaan to LBCI: Halting the governmental formation was not a Lebanese decision

Change and Reform Bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan said on Saturday that what happened in Indonesia with Lebanese citizens is a humanitarian disaster, stressing that such incidents are common in more than one country.

MP Kanaan called during LBCI’s Nharkom Said on all officials and politicians to stand by the side of the victims’ relatives, stressing that “the High Relief Commission (HRC) was not established to fund the elections or an international tribunal, but to deal with disasters similar to the one that occurred with Lebanese citizens who were reported dead on Friday after a boat carrying them to Australia sank off the coast of Indonesia."

MP Kanaan added that the HRC should take the appropriate measures to aid the affected families, highlighting the fact that more than 40,000 Lebanese citizens leave their country annually to work abroad.

On another note, MP Kanaan pointed out the previously set conditions regarding the formation of the cabinet were not locally agreed upon, stressing that “disrupting the parliamentary elections and halting the governmental formation were based on foreign decisions.”

In the same context, MP Kanaan said “when we opposed extending the mandate of the parliament, our decision was internally agreed upon.”

Kanaan called on political factions to create an internal Lebanese space that sets Lebanon free from any foreign intervention, highlighting that his bloc is ready to participate in dialogue sessions to reach “purely Lebanese agreements”.
