Calm prevails over Tripoli

Calm was restored on Sunday to the northern city of Tripoli following tension that erupted on the backdrop of the arrest of Jabal Mohsen resident Youssef Diab.

Following a security meeting held at MP Mohammad Kabbara’s residence Saturday evening, Tripoli’s official figures called on the residents to allow the security forces perform their duties.

The conferees also stressed the need to continue the investigations in order to arrest all suspects involved in implementing attacks to create instability in the region.

Clashes erupted on Friday between Tripoli's Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tebbaneh on the Syria Street – al-Mallouleh axe, on the backdrop of the arrest of Youssef Diab from Jabal Mohsen.

In this regard, sources said that the security forces that were carrying out a raid operation to arrest Diab were subject to gunfire, forcing them to respond.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
