Tripoli’s clashes kill 2, injure dozens

Heavy gunfire was reported Wednesday evening in the region of al-Baqqar in the northern city of Tripoli as Lebanese Armed Forces units were conducting patrols across the streets.        

Elsewhere, sources said that sniping operations continued between Bab al-Tebbaneh and Jabal Mohsen, while LAF deployed in the vicinity of the residence of Arab Democratic Patry official Refaat Eid.

Traffic was very low while the majority of the schools and universities closed their doors.

This as reports said that the death toll resulting from the recent clashes reached two deaths while 30 others were injured.

Clashes erupted on Monday overnight in the city of Tripoli with tension prevailing over various axes and shells landing in the city.   
  
The clashes continued on Tuesday in the city's Syria Street, Al-Baqqar, Tallat al-Omari, and al-Mankoubin regions.                 

Lebanese Armed Forces Units responded to the sources of fire, and conducted motorized patrols inside the city, and on the international highway that links Tripoli to Akkar.  

Numerous residents, mainly in Tripoli's al-Baqqar Street and Syria Street, have fled the city following overnight clashes that left one person killed and several people injured.

In the positions, MP Mohammad Kabbara said that the events taking place in Tripoli aim at misleading the investigations conducted to unveil the terrorist network that implemented the attacks in August, noting that the authorities failed in dealing with the security issues of the city.

During a press conference, Kabbara called on President Michel Sleiman to take the necessary measures to protect the city and put an end to the violations committed in the region of Jabal Mohsen.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.                                           

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
