Mikati: Swift measures to be implemented in Tripoli to restore tranquility

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati called Thursday on all the parties to cooperate with the security apparatuses in order to control the situation deemed unacceptable in the northern port city of Tripoli

Following a meeting held to tackle the security situation in Tripoli at Baabda presidential Palace under the chairmanship of President Michel Sleiman, Mikati declared that swift measures will be implemented in the city in order to restore tranquility among the residents, stressing the need that the state imposes its authority.

“I do not rule out the possibility that Lebanon attends Geneva II peace talks on Syria, since Lebanon is an effective country on the diplomatic level,” Mikati said.

Prior to the meeting, President Sleiman held talks with caretaker PM Mikati over the situation in Tripoli.

Lebanese national Mosbah al-Nazer was killed on Thursday morning and 8 were wounded in armed clashes in the northern city.

This brings the total number of those killed to 3 while the injured number at 35.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
