Former PM Hariri praises LAF security measures in Tripoli

Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri praised on Tuesday the measures implemented by the Lebanese Armed Forces in the northern city of Tripoli as "a good start," hoping that "they will definitely end all attempts to undermine the city's security and stability".

“We hope the LAF deployment will restore the people's trust in the state's role in protecting them and halt all armed clashes fueled by 'well-known parties' that act as the security and military arm of the Syrian regime in Lebanon,” he said.

“The state should take the necessary measures that will place Tripoli's security under the rule of law," Hariri said in a statement.

Former PM Hariri also stressed that "Tripoli's residents will cooperate with the army and the security forces," hoping that all political covers would be lifted off certain parties, as he said.

Lebanese Armed Forces Units began redeploying on Tuesday morning in Tripoli's Syria Street which separates the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.

Cautious calm prevailed overnight on the axis of both regions and clashes eased after intensive contacts were held with the concerned authorities in order to ensure the army's deployment in Syria Street.

Fighting resumed last Monday in the northern city of Tripoli between gunmen of rival Lebanese sects where at least 12 people have been killed since last week.
