Caretaker PM Mikati says claims he delayed arrival of Indonesian boat victims are false

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati dismissed on Thursday all claims stating that he was attempting to delay the arrival of the airplane carrying the bodies of the Indonesian boat disaster victims to Beirut airport for political reasons.

“It seems that some parties have no respect for anything even for the dead,” Mikati said.

“The Lebanese authorities have rented, upon the directives of Mikati, a private airplane to carry the victims’ bodies and have asked the Indonesian authorities to expedite the administrative procedures for the airplane’s arrival in the morning,” Mikati’s media office said.

Caretaker PM Mikati also tasked caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel yesterday to establish an Emergency Operations Room to speed up procedures undertaken in Beirut airport to transfer the bodies to the town of Akkar.

On Friday September 26, dozens of Lebanese nationals hailing from the town of Akkar were reported dead after a boat carrying them to Australia sank off the coast of Indonesia.

Preliminary information showed that an Iraqi national known as Abou Salah was in charge of transferring the persons to Indonesia before reaching Australia.

The boat was headed for Australia's Christmas Island.
