Mikati: Cabinet decision on wage increase the best that could be achieved

PM Najib Mikati said on Saturday that the agreement reached at the cabinet regarding the wage adjustment is the best that could be achieved amid the current economic and financial hardship in Lebanon.

The prime minister added that he is aware that the reached decision does not meet the ambitions of workers, confirming that the reality cannot withstand taking risks that might affect workers.

During the 31st session of Council of Arab Social Affairs Ministers, Mikati said that Lebanon is going through a difficult phase that requires cooperation, rather than racing to lift the ceiling of demands at such a critical time.

Mikati added that “what was agreed upon during the cabinet session is only a small part of a comprehensive plan put forth by Labor Minister Charbel Nahhas; the cabinet has decided to put the plan under study.”

Mikati slammed the recent attack on the French U.N. Peacekeepers, voicing determination to boost cooperation between the LAF and UNIFIL.
