Tensions in Tripoli kill one, injure four people

Lebanese national Ali Abdel Kader Soueid was killed on Sunday in the sniping operations that targeted  Tripoli's Bab al-Tebbaneh neighborhood.
Soueid hails from the northern district of Doniyeh.

This as calm prevailed in Tripoli's Syria street with sporadic sniping activity.

Earlier, tensions erupted overnight in Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tebbaneh neighborhoods in the northern city of Tripoli.

Rocket attacks and exchange of fire have been reported in the city, injuring four people identified as : Leila Ramadan, Taleb Damer Dib, Mariana al-Sheikh and Mohammad Zafer.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.

These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
