US State Department denounces 'terrorist' explosion in Lebanon's Hermel

The United States condemned the explosion that rocked the Lebanese town of Hermel on Thursday, calling to refrain from any reprisals.

"The Lebanese people have the right to live without violence," the US said.

"The US condemns with the strongest terms the terrorist explosion that targeted Hermel," US State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said at the opening of her press conference.

Psaki stressed that the US will continue to support Lebanon's national institutions, including the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Internal Security Forces while working on maintaining the country's stability and sovereignty.

On Thursday 16 January, a car bomb exploded near a local government building in the Lebanese town of Hermel, killing three people and wounding 40.

One of the victims was identified as Hussein Mohammad Amr, a Lebanese worker at the Hermel's municipality.

Security sources told LBCI that a suicide bomber had detonated the explosive laden vehicle, a black Kia SUV parked on the side of the road near a bank.

Later on, Lebanon-Based al-Nusra Front issued a statement whereby it claimed responsibility for the suicide bomb attack that targeted the eastern town of Hermel near the main square where the Serail is located.

The statement said the attack came in retaliation to “Hezbollah’s crimes against Syria’s Sunni women and children.”
