FM Bassil asks Lebanon's envoy Salam to file complaint against Israel

Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil asked Lebanon's Special Envoy to the United Nations Nawaf Salam to file a complaint against Israel for launching two strikes on the eastern Lebanese village of Janta.

Bassil also asked Salam to submit the complaint letter to UN Chief Ban Ki-moon who will refer it to the President of the UN Security Council.

In this regard, Bassil denounced the Israeli attack on Lebanon as a violation to the UN resolution 1701, calling on the United Nations to compel Israel to abide by this resolution.

On Wednesday, President Michel Sleiman ordered that the necessary measures be taken in a bid to file a complaint to the United Nations Security Council over the Israeli strike that targeted a Hezbollah base on Monday.

In this regard, he tasked FM Bassil with gathering all available information on the strike ahead of filing the complaint.

The attack is a violation to the UN resolution 1701, Sleiman said.

Hezbollah said on Wednesday that Israel carried out an airstrike targeting its positions in Lebanon near the border with Syria earlier this week, claiming it caused damage but no casualties.

Hezbollah said the attack was near the eastern Lebanese village of Janta. It vowed to retaliate but said it will "choose the appropriate time and place."
