PM Salam holds meeting over Tripoli at Grand Serail

Prime Minister Tammam Salam reiterated on Tuesday the responsibility of the Lebanese army and the security apparatuses to implement laws and regulations on everyone, to pursue criminals, and to resote security and stability in the northern city of Tripoli.

He also reiterated his support for the army and security apparatuses in order to assume their role.

Salam’s comments were made following a meeting held at the Grand Serail with former PM Najib Mikati, along with various Tripoli deputies and officials to discuss the situation at the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli

He also noted that he has been requested to submit to the cabinet a security and economic plan for Tripoli and the deprived regions.

A new round of clashes erupted in Tripoli on Thursday March 13th killing at least 12 and injuring 63 others.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.

These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
