Change and Reform bloc says will not vote for a "consensual president"

The Change and Reform bloc held on Tuesday its weekly meeting in Rabieh during which it asserted that the bloc's MPs will not vote for a "consensual president."

Former Minister Salim Jreissati said on behalf of the bloc that the boycotting of the election session is "a political right", adding that the bloc is not obstructing the presidential elections.

Jreissati concluded by saying that the presidential entitlement belongs to all the people, adding that the bloc will not make compromises over the presidency.

Lebanese MPS failed in the first and second rounds of the vote to elect a new president due to disputes between the March 8 and 14 camps. A new round is scheduled to take place on Wednesday although it is almost certain that the third election session would face the same fate of its predecessors due to the boycott of March 8 MPs.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, who is the March 14 alliance's only candidate, failed in the first round to obtain the needed two-thirds of votes of the 128-member parliament.

In the second round, March 8's MPs boycotted the session, resulting in a lack of quorum.

March 8 did not yet officially announce its candidate. But the camp’s figures have reiterated that Lebanon needs a consensual person in the country's top Christian post.

President Michel Sleiman's tenure ends in May 2014 but the constitutional period to elect a new head of state began on March 25.
