Patriarch Rai: MPs should carry out their national duty and elect a new President
Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai stressed on Sunday the need to elect a new president in order "to end all crises in the country."

“MPs should carry out their national duty and elect a new president for the country,” Rai said during his sermon.

The Patriarch voiced his rejection to the presidential vacuum "at any cost as it violates the national pact and the constitution.”

Parliament has failed to elect a new president over disputes between the March 8 and 14 camps.

Most of the March 8 camp's MPs have boycotted four rounds of elections over their call for an agreement on a consensual president and their rejection of the candidacy of the Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea.

A fifth round of polls is scheduled to be held next Thursday, two days before the expiry of President Michel Sleiman's six-year tenure.
