Three Bab al-Tabbaneh assailants turn themselves over to LAF

Three suspects have handed themselves over to the Lebanese Army Intelligence in the northern city of Tripoli, the Army Command- Orientation Directorate said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Talal Mustafa al-Issa, Khaled Jamal al-Rai and Mahmoud Mustafa al-Hallaq, who were involved in the recent attack on the army and wanted on several arrest warrants, have turned themselves over to the Intelligence Directorate," the military said.

Investigations were launched under the supervision of the concerned judiciary, the statement said, adding that the army is pursuing the rest of the assailants.

The Army Command - Orientation Directorate issued a statement on Tuesday morning stating that around 1:30 am an army vehicle came under attack in Tripoli’s Bab el-Tabbaneh.

The Army Command said 8 LAF soldiers were wounded during the attack, pointing out that they were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

It also stated that soldiers responded to the sources of fire, noting that army units conducted raids in the northern city of Tripoli to arrest a number of fugitives.

Security plan:

Early last month, the Lebanese army started implementing, in cooperation with the security apparatuses, a security plan in Lebanon's northern city upon the directives of the cabinet.

This plan has so far succeeded in implementing peace in the area, and has led to the arrest of several axis leaders and fugitives.

Cabinet had tasked the army and security forces with controlling the security situation in Tripoli and the eastern Bekaa Valley in areas bordering Syria. Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.

These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district that supports that uprising in Syria, and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
