Jumblatt: Syrian elections will increase the suffering of the people

National Struggle Front Leader MP Walid Jumblatt denounced on Monday the campaigns raised against Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros in light of his visit to the Holy Land.

In his weekly statement to al-Anbaa website, Jumblatt said that Patriarch Rai succeeded to give Christian Palestinians a "glimpse of hope amid the difficult conditions they are currently withstanding."

MP Jumblatt stated that the latest regional developments as well as the circumstances that surround Palestinians, Iraqis, and Syrians in addition to the negative repercussions on Christians in particular pushed Patriarch Rai towards taking this step.

In this regard, Jumblatt pointed out that Rai’s position in terms of his visit remains brave and courageous.

On another note, MP Jumblatt praised the decision of Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq that stipulates the annulment of the refugee status in light of Syrian expats heading to Damascus.

As for the Syrian elections, Jumblatt considered that “the electoral process will be similar to a drama that will increase the suffering of the Syrian people.”
