U.S. denounces Raouche explosion, underscores need to avoid violence- official

"The United States condemns in the strongest terms the explosion that rocked the Duroy Hotel in Beirut's Raouche region," a U.S. official said on Thursday at the end of a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Lebanese former Prime Minister Saad Hariri in Paris.

The official also hoped those who carried out the explosion would be brought to justice, stressing that this issue is "highly critical".

"There is a need to avoid further rounds of violence in Lebanon," the official said. "We fear that the war in Syria and Iraq will have (further) repercussions (on Lebanon)," he noted, saying "that's another reason for U.S. tangible support to the Lebanese army and Internal Security Forces".

A suicide bomber blew himself up at the Duroy Hotel in Beirut's Raouche region on Wednesday as General Security forces were conducting a raid, wounding several people, including members from the General Security.

The attack is the third blast in the country in less than a week.

Lebanon has been increasingly drawn into Syria's crisis. Lebanese Shi'ite group Hezbollah has been fighting alongside President Bashar al-Assad's forces against the mainly Sunni Muslim rebels, who have also been supported by Lebanese Sunnis.
