Former PM Mikati: Aoun's suggestion targets constitution, Taef Accord

Former Prime Minister Najib Mikati described the suggestion submitted by Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun on Monday as a "coup against both the Lebanese constitution and the Taef Accord."

Earlier on Monday, MP Aoun had suggested that the Lebanese constitution be amended, allowing the Lebanese people to directly elect their president in an attempt to resolve the presidential deadlock.

Mikati also considered the coup to be "against Aoun's political course that started upon his return from exile."

Mikati called on all Lebanese leaders to reach common ground over pending issues in order to avoid further divisions and fragmentation among the Lebanese people.

Lebanese lawmakers failed in several rounds to elect a successor to President Michel Sleiman, whose six-year mandate expired on May 25 after the March 8 and 14 camps failed to agree on a consensual candidate.

The majority of the March 8 camp's MPs, including the lawmakers of Aoun's Change and Reform bloc, have boycotted the election sessions, leading to a lack of the needed quorum.
