Sheikh Raad to LBCI: We held negotiations to release captives at the state's request

Sheikh Amir Raad, a member of the Association of Muslim Scholars, said on Monday that the association has held negotiations for the release of the Lebanese captives at the request of state officials, noting that mediation efforts were unanimously agreed upon.

In a phone call with LBCI's Nharkom Said TV show, Raad noted that the association includes more than 457 scholars in Lebanon, and said: "We do not agree with the gunmen's ideology".

The Association of Muslim Scholars has been holding negotiations calling for the release of Lebanese Armed Forces soldiers and security forces members who were abducted in the border town of Arsal.

Clashes erupted in Arsal on Saturday (August 01) when Syrian gunmen deployed across the region after the LAF arrested Syrian national Imad Ahmad Jomaa at a checkpoint.

The army said 18 soldiers have been killed, with at least 30 other ISF and LAF soldiers missing and 86 injured in the fighting.

Lebanese security officials say the fighters include members of al Qaeda's Syria branch, the Nusra Front, and an al Qaeda splinter group, the Islamic State, which has seized swathes of land in Syria and Iraq.
