EDL takes legal action against 3 contract workers
The state-run National News Agency reported on Wednesday that the Electricite du Liban administration declared that it is taking legal action against three contract workers for their actions at the company's headquarters in Beirut.

The agency added that the administration filed the charges against them for closing the company and preventing the employees from carrying out their duties.

Charges also include defamation against the EDL and its board of directors, as well as misleading the public through spreading false allegations. The three contract workers were identified by their initials as: L.M., B.B., and A.S.

In turn, the union for workers and users of the Electricite du Liban (EDL) stressed the need to lift the 'siege' imposed on the company, in order to allow the employees to carry out their regular duties.

In this context, the union issued a statement whereby it warned against keeping the public facility closed, noting that this situation will jeopardize the future of the institution and its employees.

In the statement, the union called on the political forces, the Lebanese cabinet and the Parliament to put an end to this situation, threatening of resorting to escalatory measures as of next week.

The EDL workers staged an open-ended strike last week after accusing the company of not abiding by the law following a decision for the employment of only 897 out of the 2,000 workers.

The workers erected tents outside the company's headquarters and several of its branches, and closed its doors to prevent any employee from entering.

On Thursday, EDL Director General Kamal al-Hayek said the state-run firm was not a “barn” and denied the had law allowed all contract workers to become full-time employees.
