The Council of Catholic Patriarchs and Bishops called Saturday on the Lebanese deputies to free themselves from foreign pressures, assume their national responsibility of electing a new president and pass a new electoral law that ensures fair representation and guarantees the rights of all sects. The council also called on the presidential candidates to give up their personal interests for the sake of Lebanon’s salvation.
In a statement issued following the meeting held to close the conference on the family, the council denounced the behavior of the political authorities, especially the parliament, which has been abstaining from electing a new president, but instead extended its own mandate.
On another note, the council stressed the need to support the Lebanese Armed Forces, which is the only institution capable of protecting the Lebanese citizens.
