Lebanon's constitutional council fails to decide on Parliament extension appeal

Lebanon's constitutional council held on Friday an open-ended closed session to discuss a report submitted by the council's rapporteur over the Free Patriotic Movement's appeal to the decree extending the Parliament's mandate.

The session ended without reaching a decision on the appeal and no date was set for the upcoming session.

Meanwhile, civil society organizations staged a sit-in outside the council, hoisting Lebanese flags and banners condemning the said extension.

Friday's session was the second one held by the council which had also convened on Thursday the 13th of November.

On November 13, the Free Patriotic Movement challenged the decree extending the Parliament' term before the Constitutional Council.

Change and Reform bloc secretary and FPM member, MP Ibrahim Kanaan, presented the challenge, urging Lebanese citizens "not to lose faith in state institutions during the darkest times".

On Wednesday the 5th of November, Lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to extend their mandate, skipping scheduled elections for the second consecutive time. They say Lebanon's security situation is too fragile to allow elections during neighboring Syria's civil war.

Rights groups worry that lawmakers are eroding the right to vote in a country with a tradition of free elections.
