State Prosecutor tasks Lebanon judges to launch radioactive material probe
State Prosecutor Judge Samir Hammoud has tasked Judge Sabouh Sleiman with investigating the presence of radioactive material in goods imported to the Lebanese territories, the state-run National News Agency said on Tuesday.     

“Sleiman would interrogate the customs over the failure to notify the general prosecutor's office on the suspicious material at the Beirut Port and the Beirut International Airport,” the agency reported.      

Judge Hammoud also asked Mount Lebanon Judge Claude Karam and Beirut Judge Ziad Abou Haidar to launch - each within his own jurisdiction - an “immediate” investigation into this case, NNA added.       

Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil said on Monday that Lebanese customs agents have seized home and culinary equipment that contain hazardous radioactive material.                

“The materials were seized at the Beirut Port and the Beirut International Airport,” the minister noted, saying “it is completely unacceptable that Lebanon become a dumpsite for toxic waste”.               

“The purchase of cheap goods will not be accepted,” Khalil said in a press conference at the Beirut Port on Monday, adding “this file will be referred to investigations and importing companies will be held accountable”.
