The parliament failed once again to elect a new president on Wednesday over lack of quorum despite all the efforts deployed by the rival parties to hold dialogue to end the presidential vacuum. Speaker Nabih Berri postponed, for the 17th time, the session until January 28. Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun is still the candidate of the March 8 camp in the face of Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, the presidential candidate of the March 14 forces. The rivalry between the two leaders has led to a lack of quorum in the previous 16 electoral sessions, amid a boycott by the FPM lawmakers and Hezbollah. The presidential seat has been vacant since President Michel Sleiman's mandate ended on May 25.
