Filling of Beirut port’s 4th basin suspended- director
Beirut Port director Hassan Qoreitem held on Wednesday a meeting with Education Minister Elias Bou Saab with talks featuring high on a controversial project aiming to fill the fourth basin at the Beirut port.

Following the meeting, Qoreitem said the filling of the port’s basis has been suspended in order to pave the way for other solutions.

On Monday, the truckers syndicate commenced an open-ended sit-in, suspending all work until the said project is referred to the Lebanese cabinet.

The union also blocked the entrances to the port, thus halting the entry and exit of goods at the facility.

The aforementioned project will provide more space to store containers. But there are fears that turning the Beirut port into a transshipment hub would direct large vessels to the Port of Tripoli as the 4th basin will no longer be able to receive big cargo ships.

As a result, hundreds of Beirut port employees, mostly truckers, may lose their jobs.
