Lebanon’s Grand Mufti commemorates 10th anniversary of Hariri's assassination
Lebanon’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel Latif Daryan visited on Friday the grave of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in Downtown Beirut and paid tribute to the slain premier who was killed back in 2005.

“Throughout his life and following his martyrdom, Hariri has become a symbol of stability and security in Lebanon,” Mufti Daryan said.

“We have extended the parliament’s mandate twice, yet we failed to elect a new president and Lebanon is grappling with instability due to wars in neighboring countries. Amid this situation, we renew our determination to hold onto the state and coexistence as we mark the 10th anniversary of Hariri’s assassination,” Daryan said.

“The ex-premier focused on main sectors like education and development while reviving the work of state institutions as well as Lebanon’s role on the international level,” the Grand Mufti added.

The Feb. 14, 2005 assassination of Hariri, referred to by some as Lebanon's Sept. 11, killed the former premier and 21 others, and wounded more than 200 people, stunning a nation long used to violence and political assassinations.

Hariri, a charismatic billionaire businessman, was Lebanon's most prominent Sunni politician. Although a divisive figure, he was credited with rebuilding downtown Beirut after the ravages of the 1975-1990 civil war.

A U.N.-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon, set up in the Dutch town of Leidschendam, started the trial of five Hezbollah suspects in absentia in January 2014. Many Lebanese politicians and witnesses have traveled to the Netherlands-based court to give their testimonies over the past year.
