Head of INTERPOL Foundation for a Safer World Elias Murr meets Pope Francis

Head of the INTERPOL Foundation for a Safer World Elias Murr met on Wednesday Pope Francis at the Vatican.

He discussed with him the dangers facing the Christians of the Orient, and ways of cooperation with the Vatican to protect the religious heritage of the world through a strategic plan set by the INTERPOL in this regard.

On Thursday, the Islamic State group released a video purportedly showing militants using sledgehammers to smash statues, describing them as idols. The vandalism drew global condemnation.

The destruction is part of a campaign by the extremists, who have destroyed a number of shrines. They are also believed to have sold ancient artifacts on the black market to finance their bloody campaign.
